Some portrait sessions take on a life of their own almost from the moment they begin. Alison’s London portrait session in Westminster was exactly that kind of afternoon, unhurried, warm, and full of those small moments that make the best photographs. She’d been thinking about having portraits taken for a while and had decided she wanted London to feel like a real part of the story. Westminster, with its riverside grandeur and timeless streets, was the obvious choice.
Choosing Westminster for a Portrait Photoshoot in London
Westminster is a neighbourhood that does something interesting for portrait photography: it makes people feel like they belong somewhere important. There’s a gravitas to it, the bridge, the river, the Parliament buildings, but also, when you find the right corners, a surprising quietness. For clients who want their London portraits to feel both personal and considered, it’s a location I return to again and again.
For Alison, we used three distinct spots across the afternoon: the Embankment, Westminster Bridge, and the streets near Parliament Square. Each gave us a completely different energy, which is exactly what makes Westminster such a generous location for portrait work.
The Embankment: Where the Session Found Its Heart
We began along the Thames Embankment, arriving early enough in the afternoon to catch the warm, directional light that falls beautifully along the riverside path. The Embankment has a quality of light that’s hard to describe unless you’ve seen it; the river reflects and amplifies it in a way that flatters almost any subject.
Alison was relaxed and quietly confident, the kind of person who photographs beautifully, precisely because she’s not trying to perform. We worked through a series of portraits that balanced stillness and movement, letting the riverside setting breathe around her rather than compete with it. The cast-iron lamp posts, the long perspectives along the river walk, the London Eye in the background, all of it found its way into the frames.

Westminster Bridge: Portraits with a London Skyline
We moved to Westminster Bridge mid-session, which gave us access to one of the most immediately recognisable views in London. The bridge is a genuinely beautiful location for portraits when approached thoughtfully, the stonework, the sky above the Thames, the distant towers of Westminster but it requires good timing and an eye for quieter moments.
Alison’s natural ease meant we could linger here without any sense of pressure. We used the bridge’s architectural details to create more structured frames, then stepped back for wider shots that showed the full sweep of the river behind her. The balance between person and place is always the thing I’m watching for neither should overwhelm the other.

Parliament Square: A Quieter Kind of Grandeur
We finished the session in the streets around Parliament Square, where the late afternoon light was doing something lovely against the pale stone of the buildings. Away from the main tourist flow, this area offers a more textured, intimate setting — doorways, archways, stretches of iron railing, wide pavements that catch the evening light.
These final portraits were some of my favourites from the whole session. Alison had fully settled into the rhythm of the shoot by this point, and it showed. There’s a particular quality in photographs taken when someone has stopped thinking about being photographed — a lightness, a presence, and we found that here, in the quieter corners of Westminster’s most famous square.
What Makes a London Portrait Session Worth It
Alison told me afterwards that she’d been nervous beforehand, as most people are, but that the afternoon had felt easy and genuinely enjoyable. That’s exactly what I aim for. A portrait session in London shouldn’t feel like an ordeal. It should feel like a morning well spent, with images at the end that remind you who you are right now, in this city, at this particular moment in your life.
Whether you’re looking for portraits for professional use, to mark a milestone, or simply because you’ve always wanted beautiful photographs of yourself in London, that’s reason enough. Westminster is a wonderful starting point, but there are so many corners of this city that work beautifully for portrait work.

If Alison’s session has inspired you to book your own portrait photoshoot in London, I’d love to talk about what we could create together. I work across London, Westminster, South Bank, Notting Hill, Shoreditch, and beyond, and I tailor every session to the person in front of my lens. No two shoots are the same, and that’s exactly how it should be.
