Unsung Heroes of WWII

When we think of  WWII heroes, we do not commonly think about the involvement of women during this period. In the UK, more than 6 million women, took part in the war effort “doing their bit for the country”. Not only did they replace men in factories and on the land, by 1943 close to 520,000 volunteered  joined the Army services (WRENS, WAAF, ATS and Land Army).  At the end of the War these women were encouraged to go back to the domestic sphere as they were no longer required to replace Men on the front. This project looks into photography as a way to bring back a sense of celebration and an arena for recognition of their contribution. The portraits were taken in the sitters local area with the background as a link to their glorious past.

“I feel deeply privileged to have met these women, who took great sense of pride, talking about their past experiences as volunteers and have helped progress the condition of women.”
